Remember this?
This gorgeous and very functional piece is from the Pottery Barn Kids Cameron collection and was the inspiration piece for my playroom. It is a very expensive piece of furniture (or pieces to be exact). Probably about $1500-$2000 CAD. I’m guessing because I have never actually been inside the Vancouver store.
It’s beautiful and if I wasn’t so thrifty and resourceful then I might be the kind of person who would just buy the PBK unit.
Instead, I decided to put my DIY skills to the test and build the whole thing from scratch. Okay, not entirely true, I did need some help from Home Depot to cut the sheets of MDF.
Building the modular units was fairly easy but finishing it was a lot of work. It’s a big sanding and paint job for one person! Oh and did I mention that I’ve never built furniture before? Other than Ikea stuff that is.
Ta da! Here is my finish Playroom Storage Unit. Don’t mind my doors. I haven’t put the magnets on yet so they aren’t closed properly. I’m not entirely happy with my doors. I really need to work on my cutting skills.
So…to all you frugal parents out there looking for playroom storage units on a dime, you can save A LOT of money by building it yourself! From start to finish, it cost me approximately $450 CAD including tax for all the materials required.

That is amazing! I wouldn’t have noticed the doors if you hadn’t mentioned it. Not only am I impressed that you built the whole thing, I’m impressed you managed to find the time for it. Excellent work!
Great job! Ana has inspired so many! It’s like a building revolution!
Amazing work!!!!!!!!! You are so talented!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Thank you everyone!
You did a great job. Never mind the doors . they open and close and that is their function. You are very brave taking on such a big project. As you discovered it is the sanding and finishing that takes FOREVER. Ana was my first inspiration also. I now frequent Ana’s site and another called thedesignconfidential.com . The two sites complement each other.
Thanks! I miss working on my big projects! Thank you for the link – I will definitely check out the website:-)
