Dear Ana White,
Thank you for introducing me to an empowering, money-saving new hobby – furniture building! We’ve never met but you inspire to me to challenge myself to do things I only would once dreamed about. Thanks to you, I am now the proud owner of a beautiful Pottery Barn inspired unit that I have lusted after for years but couldn’t bring myself to splurge on. The most satisfying part is, I built it from scratch…all by myself (customized to my liking of course!). Thanks for the amazing plans and the encouragement you provide to all your fans and followers!
Remember this?
This gorgeous and very functional piece is from the Pottery Barn Kids Cameron collection and was the inspiration piece for my playroom. It is a very expensive piece of furniture (or pieces to be exact). Probably about $1500-$2000 CAD. I’m guessing because I have never actually been inside the Vancouver store.
It’s beautiful and if I wasn’t so thrifty and resourceful then I might be the kind of person who would just buy the PBK unit.
Instead, I decided to put my DIY skills to the test and build the whole thing from scratch. Okay, not entirely true, I did need some help from Home Depot to cut the MDF. Building the modular units was fairly easy, finishing it was a lot of work. It’s a big sanding and paint job for one person! Oh and did I mention that I’ve never built furniture before? Other than Ikea stuff that is.
Ta da! Here is my finish Playroom Storage Unit. Don’t mind my doors. I haven’t put the magnets on yet so they aren’t closed properly. I’m not entirely happy with my doors. I really need to work on my cutting skills.
I choose bright decorator white paint for my storage project because our basement is quite dark. The idea was to do a large white unit to help brighten up the room.
So…to all you frugal parents out there wishing they could have a PBK style playroom…you can save A LOT of money by building the modular storage and media units yourself! From start to finish, it cost me approximately $450 CAD including tax for all the materials required.
