How to Create Unique Framed Wall Art with Paper Strips

Earlier this week I showed you some wall art that I created using a variation of a paper craft technique known as Iris Folding.  Now it’s your turn to work your creative magic.  I’m going to show you how to make a pretty picture out of paper strips. It’s so easy, even your 5 year old can do it.

Not too shabby for little hands.

Okay, let’s get started!

DIY Framed Wall Art Tutorial

Materials & Supplies

  • Scissors
  • Paper cutter
  • Scotch Magic Tape (permanent transparent tape)
  • 2-3 sheets 12 x 12 acid free scrap booking paper
  • Frame with  5 x7 photo matte

Directions

1. Start by choosing your favourite sheet of 12 x 12 scrap booking/craft paper. This project is great for leftover scrap paper or that single sheet you have been saving but don’t know what to use it for.

2. Cut your paper into 1 or 1.5 inch strips.

3. Fold all your paper strips in half.

4. Place a folded paper strip on the wrong side of the photo matte.  There are no rules about where to start. Once you decide where you want to start your “picture”, cut the strip to size and tape the ends down onto the matte. Here are some examples:

The idea is to work from the edges of the matte, layering your strips towards the middle until the entire open space is covered. Randomly placing your strips will result in a more “abstract” picture. Play around with your layout until you like what you see!

5. Be sure to flip your work over frequently to check for desired results. If you find a strip is not quite aligned to your liking, carefully remove tape and reposition as needed.

6. Continue layering and taping down paper strips until all open space is closed. Here is a finished picture:

7. Place finished art work back into photo frame. Stand back and admire your own creativity.

A few things to consider…

  • You will gain faster results using wider 1.5 inch (3/4 inch when folded) strips.
  • On the other hand, using thin 1 inch (1/2 inch when folded) strips produces dainty, detailed work.
  • With careful planning and placement of your strips of paper, you can create intricate patterns and pictures such as this example:

So that’s it. Seven simple steps and you have art for your walls.

I would LOVE to see your beautiful DIY Framed Wall Art using this paper folding technique!
