On Monday I was at Michaels picking up craft paint and stencils for a project. While waiting in line, I spied one brand new Cricut Create sitting on the floor in front of the checkout area. Normally I wouldn’t give Cricut products a second glance because I’ve never really been in the market for a personal cutting machine.
That being said, I have recently been doing a little bit of research on the new Silhouette Cameo and I might just want it a little. Okay, that’s an understatement – I would really love to have one. Unfortunately, the Silhouette Cameo is not readily available in Canada and it comes with an initial price tag of $299US (which isn’t that bad considering it’s a cartridge free system and those Cricut things really add up over time).
Back to the story about the Cricut Create. The machine is exclusive to Michaels and it was on sale, marked down from $179.99 to $79.99. Yep, that’s right $100 off.
As hard as it was, I had to walk away from the box. I not that familiar with Cricut products. I just know that they are expensive cutting machines that require pricey cartridges. I wanted to go home and sleep on it for a few days.
I may have Googled the Create and read a review or two, or three or four…
By Wednesday I was itching to go back to Michaels to see if the machine was still there. I know it’s an older machine and the mat is smaller than what most crafters would prefer. The good thing is the Cricut Create is compatible with all the cartridges. It’s also compact and portable. I think that the discounted Create is a good starter option for my needs. I have specific projects I would like to try and spending $399 on the big Cricut Expression or the $299 Silhouette doesn’t make sense for a die cutting newbie.
So on Thursday I decided to make a trip to Michaels to see if the box was still there. It was and since it happened to be my birthday, I went ahead and bought it.
I know it’s not as exciting as opening up a Cricut Expression or the new Silhoutte Cameo but it’s still a new toy and I’m looking forward to trying it out.
One thing I’m not quite sold on is the cost of the Cricut Cartridges. I tried to buy an extra cartridge at Michaels because they were on sale for $39.99 but all the ones I liked were out of stock. Thankfully the machine comes with one cartridge which is enough to get me started on projects immediately.
My question is, where do you buy the cartridges? Any fellow Canadian Cricut owners in the know of great places to shop (online) for Provocraft supplies?
Looking forward to playing with my Cricut Create and showing you my projects!
